What’s In My Diaper Bag: Diaper Bags Essentials
Check out these Diaper Bag Essentials every mom must know about:
Whether you use a diaper bag or a backpack, it’s important to make sure you always pack your diaper bag essentials – which is everything you will need for any outing you may have. Because God forbid you forget your little one’s favorite toy or snack!
If you’re as nitpicky as I am, then finding the perfect diaper bag can be a major hassle. When I was searching for the perfect diaper bag to put on my registry, it seemed like I had to choose either pretty or practical. Ironically, the cute ones had only a few pockets and the ugly ones had pockets galore.
We need to find the perfect bag so we can fill it with all of our diaper bag essentials!
So of course I almost gave up hope until I saw it. The beam of light coming down from the ‘Skip Hop’ heavens. The Skip Hop Duo French Stripe Diaper Bag sang beautiful hymns about the many zips and pockets it offered.
I love this bag because not only does it offer a ton of storage, but it’s pretty resilient as well. This bag has survived mud puddles, sippy cup tragedies, food explosions and has suffered at the hands of a toddler. And strangely enough even after an entire year, it still looks good as new!
This diaper bag has a main storage area, a pocket with a portable changing pad, and several other compartments to store everything you need.
For the longest time, I relied on my mental diaper bag essentials checklist: diapers, wipes, binky, burp cloth, change of clothes, toys, food. (Of course, I forgot at least three things every single time because we all know what mom brain does to a person.) 🙂
In the last couple of months, I had the revelation of keeping the diaper bag packed at all times with the essentials needed for any outing. Of course before I leave I still make sure everything is in there, but keeping it pre-packed has made my life so much easier.
If you’re like I was and have to constantly go through your mental diaper bag essentials checklist, let this post be your own personal WRITTEN checklist.
Diapers and Wipes
These are a given. This is #1 on my diaper bag essentials checklist. Always making sure you have diapers and wipes on deck is vital for surviving any family outing.
Just the other day my daughter and I took a trip to one of our local libraries so she could play in the play area. I started to smell something stinky. Lo and behold, she pooped. I didn’t bring any diapers with me (don’t ask me why, I don’t have an answer for that).
You can imagine how that situation played out.
She was having so much fun, I couldn’t bring myself to leave. Luckily for us, another mama came to the rescue.
Moral of the story: DON’T FORGET DIAPERS! You won’t always get lucky enough to have a mommy-godmother available to you.
Not everyone uses a binky, but for those of you who do, NEVER forget it. Whether or not you have a binky on hand can be life or death anywhere you go, from grocery store runs to playdates.
My daughter isn’t really attached to hers. However we mainly use it to keep other things out of her mouth (she likes to taste EVERYTHING). And we also like to use it during bedtime.
For most of you, it’s important to have a binky on hand just in case your little one starts getting fussy or tired and needs something for comfort. Meanwhile for others like me, having a binky is a great tool to help teach your little ones not to put “no-nos” in their mouth.
That’s why this is #2 on my diaper bag essentials checklist.
Another great diaper bag essential to have on hand is a burp cloth.
If you have older babies, this may not seem as essential as it would with a smaller baby. My daughter is a year old and she doesn’t need the burp cloth for its normal use, but we still use it for other things, such as spills on her clothes and wiping her face.
Change(s) of Clothes
Having an active little one means that soiled clothing is imminent. Whether it be from grass stains or juice spills or poop explosions (for those tiny little ones out there), you’re bound to end up with some sort of stain.
For this reason, and depending on how long your outing will be, it may be beneficial to pack two spare outfits rather than one.
If you’re just going to the grocery store, one outfit is just fine. If you’re planning to be out for a few hours, two outfits are best. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!
I can’t tell you how many times this diaper bag essentials item has come in handy!
Another great item to have, just in case, is your child’s favorite toys.
If you’re going somewhere that has toys already, obviously you don’t need to worry about this one, but it’s always good to be prepared with one or two of your little one’s favorites in case of emergencies.
My daughter loves Mickey Mouse, so I always make sure to have her stuffed Mickey everywhere we go.
Bringing their favorite toy along comes in handy in so many situations. From skinned knees to mean kids, their favorite toy can help them overcome anything. Those tears and tantrums will stop when they see their favorite toy(s)!
Snacks and Refreshments
Keeping snacks and a sippy cup on deck is one of my favorite diaper bag essentials for every outing we go on. Sure, we don’t really need them when we do short trips like grocery store runs or story time programs. But on longer outings, my daughter can’t survive without her snacks and juice.
My daughters go-to snacks are the Happybaby organic teething wafers. We love these because they come in individual packs so they don’t take up nearly as much space as a snack container would.
This is even more true for moms of little squish babies. If you bottle feed and you’re planning on being out for a while, things can go from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds. Hell hath no fury like a hungry baby. Trust me … I’ve been there.
Finally, it’s important to take into consideration any weather-related items you may need.
During the summer, make sure you have a sunhat and sunscreen packed. In Spring and Fall, make sure you keep a jacket handy. And in the Winter, a blanket is a must.
Pack a small umbrella too! Here in Florida, it can (and does!) rain in an instant.
Keeping a stocked and ready-to-go bag with these diaper bag essentials made my life a million times easier.
Of course, I hope this list makes yours easier too!
